Brand Library Staff Reviews
Originally released as the documentary The Velvet Underground: Under Review (2006), The Velvet Underground: Night Games gives a chronological history of the iconic New York band in 85 minutes. The Velvet Underground was formed in 1964 after Pickwick Records songwriter Lou Reed met Welsh electric viola player John Cale. Guitarist Sterling Morrison soon joined along with drummer Maureen (Moe) Tucker. They created their own sound—the screeching of the electric viola, the unflinching poetry and vocals of Lou Reed, and Moe Tucker’s unique sense of timing. What could possibly be missing? Film projections, strobe lights, and dancers, all courtesy of Andy Warhol and his The Exploding Plastic Inevitable multimedia events! When Warhol decided to add another vocalist, German singer Nico, the band’s first (and then-unsuccessful album) The Velvet Underground & Nico was born. The documentary has interviews with several main players in this history: Moe Tucker, album concept artist Billy Name, Doug Yule (who joined the band after Cale left), and records rep Norman Dolph. The brevity of The Velvet Underground: Night Games prevents an in-depth look at the complicated history of the band and its members (the new Todd Haynes doc is better there), but there are additional features on the DVD that add to these interviews including Billy Name talking about Andy Warhol getting shot and his subsequent disillusionment with The Factory. Even thought the documentary is terse, it hits the main bullet points of the band. There’s even a quiz if you want to test your knowledge at the end; I scored 15/25. Find the Velvet Underground's discography here. -SB
From Kuno to Kebyar: Balinese Gamelan Angklung (Smithsonian Folkways Recordings, 2011). Gamelan is a traditional Indonesian ensemble and is one of the most popular forms of recorded world music. Balinese gamelan is very similar to Javanese gamelan; however the tempos are usually faster and more energetic. The sound of the beautiful bronze percussion instruments, overlapping repeated patterns and the gradual tempo changes are exciting. Gamelan angklung is a type of gamelan played at religious processions, ceremonies and for dance theater performances. The word angklung refers to a set of four tuned bamboo rattles. Seven different village ensembles were recorded from different parts of the island. These recordings are from 1964 and 1966 when Moses Asch was at the helm of Folkways Records. Ruby Ornstein did the recording and the extensive booklet notes for this recording, which are very helpful, and include a glossary and pictures. There are 14 short pieces in this 74 minute album but many gamelan pieces are much longer. The booklet also includes some information about the Balinese religion which is also fascinating. These are classic field recordings so you will hear some background noise from the community but that shouldn’t hamper listening. Beautiful music for listening and reading together, it has the ability to transport you to a magical place. -B
